It is structured for attainment of proper pronunciation, learning of the basic grammatical patterns, and the mastery of approximately 500 characters and compounds. The course emphasizes performance-learning and cultural engagement; it stresses such skills as oral communication and writing online, over the static knowledge of grammar. |

| The goal of this course remains to be to train you to function successfully in Chinese culture. We assume that you are interested in interacting with Chinese people in a way that will permit you to pursue professional goals in some segment of a Chinese society. This means that we expect you to learn how to present yourself in a way that a Chinese person will find comfortable. If a Chinese has to adapt to you, it is not likely that you can accomplish what you intend to do in China. |

| In order to do this, you will have to perform. You performance is the focus of this course. Whether you are speaking, reading, or writing, your daily performance will be the crucial factor in how well you do in this class. Once a week, you will have a 5-10 minute one-on-one conversation with the FLTA to accustom you to performing in Chinese until you are comfortable using the language in front of strangers. They are exercises you need to do to get yourself ready for HSK test. |
