Course Description

This course is for those who have finished Beginning Chinese I or the equivalent. It is structured for attainment of proper pronunciation, learning of the basic grammatical patterns, and the mastery of approximately 350 characters and compounds. The course stresses the skills of oral communication over the static knowledge of grammar.

这门课是一年级初级中文的继续; 训练的目的是要让你们发音准确、了解中文的基本语法、和再掌握三百五十个单词。我们强调口语表达,而不是死的语法知识。

The goal of this course remains to be to train you to function successfully in Chinese culture. We assume that you are interested in interacting with Chinese people in a way that will permit you to pursue professional goals in some segment of a Chinese society. This means that we expect you to learn how to present yourself in a way that a Chinese person will find comfortable. If a Chinese has to adapt to you, it is not likely that you can accomplish what you intend to do in China.

我们学中文,为的是让你们在中国社会不出现问题。如果你打算在中国生活,而且有所作为,你就必须说好中文,让中国人觉得跟你交谈很舒服。要是中国人老得去凑合你,那你就不容易成功。为了作到这一点,我们这门课强调口语交流。

In order to do this, you will have to perform. You performance is the focus of this course. Whether you are speaking, reading, or writing, your daily performance will be the crucial factor in how well you do in this class. Once a week, you will have a 5-10 minute one-on-one conversation with me or my teaching assistant from China to accustom you to performing in Chinese until you are comfortable using the language in front of strangers. We encourage you to participate Chinese Bridge language contest at Cleveland Confucius Institute.

我们会注意你说中文是否说得正确; 为了能作到这一点,我们要求你常常表演。不管是说话,阅读,还是写作,你们的表现就是这门课的重点,也决定了你们这门课的成绩。现在你们已经习惯在班上说中文了;我们还要你们在这方面继续努力,最后能在陌生人面前很自由地说中文。
